Under Providence, September 21, 2009 - part 1

Chris and Scott joined me going up into Providence.  Two rivers, the Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck come together right in the middle of Providence.  The tide was high which raised the level of the rivers.  That got us past the shallow spots that havestopped me before.  We got almost up to the first dam on each river before the water got too shallow (and fast) to get any further.

- blogged in two posts 'cause of the 1M posting limit - just too many good pix to do in one post -

We launched from Bold Point Park across from Providence.

Long ago this was an active waterfront area.  These are the remains of a couple of sunken barges.

And these are the remains of piers.

The bay is very narrow this far up.  Across the way is a boat yard with all sorts of interesting vessels in it.

I would not want to bring a big boat in amongst these piling stumps, but it's fun to explore in a kayak!

This is the remains of a yacht club.

The other side of the river is still quite active.  This is a mooring buoy for ocean going ships.  Look at the size of those hooks!

From here, we headed upstream into the city of Providence.  (next post)
